Car Batteries in Winter: Why They Give Out Right Now

As soon as it turns cold, we see a jump in calls about cars that won't start in the morning. Usually the cold alone isn't to blame – it's a battery that's already been running on empty for a while and finally gives up in winter.

Why cold weakens the battery

The capacity a car battery can actually deliver drops noticeably at low temperatures, because chemical processes slow down in the cold. At the same time, the engine needs more current for a cold start than in summer, because the engine oil is thicker and creates more resistance. Add a battery that never gets fully recharged anyway because of lots of short trips, and there's often simply not enough energy left on a cold morning for a reliable start.

Typical warning signs

Watch out for these signs before the battery gives out completely:

• The starter turns over noticeably more sluggishly than usual, and the engine sounds "tired".
• The start-stop system stops engaging because the electronics don't detect enough reserve capacity.
• The interior lights and radio dim briefly or flicker during start-up.
• The battery has already been in the car for four to six years or longer.

None of these signs is proof on its own, but together they're a clear signal that a test is worthwhile. Corroded or loose terminal clamps can cause similar symptoms too, and are quick to check.

A test only takes a few minutes

A battery test uses a diagnostic tool to measure the actual starting performance against the target value, and reliably shows whether the battery is still fit for winter or should be replaced soon. It only takes a few minutes and is far cheaper and more relaxed than a tow truck or a jump start on a cold, dark morning.

If you do a lot of short-distance driving – to work, to the station, to the shops – it's worth having the battery checked more often anyway, since the charge balance is especially hard to maintain that way. Occasionally topping it up with a charger can extend its lifespan further, but it's no substitute for a proper check before winter.
